A well-packed suitcase is any traveller’s best friend. There’s nothing worse than hauling a giant suitcase throughout your journey only to discover you don’t need half of what you’ve packed— and you can’t do any shopping because you’ve got no more space in your suitcase.
The best way to get around situations like these is by curating a few key items to form a special travel capsule wardrobe for your travels. To do this, you should select garments that can work in multiple different settings, keeping in mind your destination’s climate and the activities you plan to do.
The best travel clothing includes pieces that can be layered, added, or taken off throughout the day, and that don’t wrinkle easily as you may not always have an iron on hand. Furthermore, it’s important to keep in mind your preferred colour palette in order to be able to easily mix and match your outfits.
Whether you’re hitting the beach or exploring the city, here are five of the most important items you need to keep your looks on fleek throughout your summer travels!
1. White T-Shirt

The perfect white tee is one of the best things you can invest in, both for travel and for every day. It’s laid-back, comfortable, and classic— three things that make it a great choice for a wide variety of occasions. Whether you prefer a v-neck, crew-neck, or a cap sleeve, this wardrobe staple can be easily dressed up or down, and goes with practically everything.
Our tip? Get something in a moisture-wicking material like cotton or tencel to keep unsightly sweat stains at bay, and opt for a non-cropped version so you can have the option of tucking it in to your bottoms for a cropped look or wearing it loose for a more relaxed vibe. Also, look for shirts with neat, well-placed seams to ensure a truly put-together look.
2. Dad Denim
Nothing quite screams summer like a great pair of jorts! There are so many styles you can choose from, whether you prefer a light wash, deep true blue denim, or an edgy black variation. However, in terms of length, the longer, ‘dad’ style of jorts is totally in right now. Knee-length jorts are steadily growing more and more in style of late, with high-profile celebrities such as Bella and Gigi Hadid being seen sporting the higher-coverage ‘dad shorts’ on their off-duty days.
Dad denim is also incredibly practical for travelling, giving you proper coverage and protection when sitting in public places— whether you’re in a cold airport or kicking back on a rattan lounge chair by the beach. Additionally, they’re suitable to wear in locations where you need to be a little more culturally sensitive, and where your underwear-baring hot pants might be frowned upon.

3. Comfortable Sneakers
A good-quality white sneaker is truly one of the most versatile items any closet can have. They’re timeless, comfortable to walk in, and add a carefree, playful vibe to your look, and are suitable for both casual and semi-formal occasions. It’s becoming more and more acceptable to wear sneakers on a night out, which makes boogieing the night away much more appealing!
A word of caution, however– if you opt for a white pair of kicks, we advise picking out a shoe in a stain-resistant material to keep them looking fresh and clean with minimal maintenance throughout your travels. Furthermore, above all, ensure you select a pair that’s comfortable for your arches, because trust us– you’ll be running around in them all summer.

4. A Killer Matching Set
Matching sets are one of our favourite secret weapons of a capsule wardrobe, no matter the season— and there are two reasons why. Firstly, they’re effortlessly stylish. Worn together, a matching set can make you look extra put-together despite putting next to no thought into your look. Secondly, you can mix and match them with different tops and bottoms to create brand-new looks, which allows for plenty of versatility.
Since enjoying a burst of popularity last spring, brands have stepped up their matching set game just in time for the summer, offering an array of stunning options from printed to plain and everything in between.
If you’re aiming for a low-key getaway, we’d advise going with a crisp, all-white set to blend easily with the rest of your apparel and keep you cool in the summer sun. If you’re itching to go a little bolder, pick a set in a chic print that will help jazz up your ensembles when worn apart, and make a serious style statement when combined.

5. A Lightweight Coverup
The best summer vacations are usually spent in and out of the pool or the ocean, and you can’t achieve the perfect beach or poolside look without a complementary coverup. A great cover up can do wonders at making your outfit resort-ready as opposed to simply functional, and can even sometimes be repurposed for other ensembles.
Whether you prefer a wrap dress, tunic, or a simple sarong, we’d recommend opting for something made of a breathable fabric such as linen or cotton. Also, look out for a piece that’s adjustable so you can choose to hide or show off a cheeky bit of swimsuit underneath, depending on the occasion.
